First, Rule Out the Simple Stuff
- Thermostat on COOL, setpoint a few degrees below room temp, fan on AUTO.
- Dirty filter — the number one cause of weak cooling we see.
- Blocked condenser — leaves and debris packed against the outdoor unit.
- Tripped breaker — the indoor fan can run while the outdoor unit stays off.
Check for a Frozen Coil
If vent air feels barely cool and there's ice on the copper lines at the air handler, the evaporator coil has frozen — usually from restricted airflow, low refrigerant, or both.
Turn the system OFF at the thermostat and let the ice melt completely — this can take hours. Don't chip at the ice. A technician needs to find why it froze, or it'll freeze right back up.
What We Usually Find
- Low refrigerant from a leak — a recharge without finding the leak is a short-term fix.
- A weak or failed capacitor — the part that starts the compressor and fan motor.
- Dirty condenser or evaporator coils that can't move heat properly.
- Duct problems — leaks in a hot attic dumping cold air where it does no good.

Common questions
How cold should the air coming out of my vents feel?
A healthy system delivers supply air noticeably cooler than room air. If vent air feels like room temperature, something is wrong — we measure the temperature split on every cooling visit.
My AC runs all day in summer. Is that normal?
On the hottest afternoons, long run times are normal — the system is sized for your worst days. Running all day and still losing ground is not — that's the sign to have it checked.
Can I just add refrigerant myself?
No. Refrigerant handling requires certification, and low refrigerant means a leak that needs to be found and fixed. Topping it off without repairing the leak means paying for the same problem again soon.
Will a dirty filter really stop my AC from cooling?
Yes — a badly clogged filter chokes airflow enough to freeze the coil, which then barely cools at all. It's the cheapest fix in air conditioning.
