Most electrical calls start the same way: something stopped working or started acting strange. Dead outlets, flickering lights, tripping breakers, warm switch plates. The symptom is obvious, the cause usually is not, and replacing parts at random is the most expensive way to find out.
Our electricians troubleshoot first. We test the circuit, trace the problem to its source, and only then give you a price in writing. You approve it before any work begins, so there are no surprises on the invoice.
The calls we run most
Day in and day out, electrical repair visits come down to a handful of common problems. We see these constantly across Wellington and the surrounding area, and they are all diagnosable with the right testing.
- Dead outlets or outlets that work only sometimes
- Flickering or dimming lights
- Breakers that trip, or trip the moment something is plugged in
- Switches or switch plates that feel warm to the touch
- Ceiling fans or light fixtures that hum, buzz, or quit
- Power lost to part of the house after a storm
What you can safely check yourself
Before you call, there are a few safe steps worth trying. If a breaker has tripped, you may reset it once. Check whether a GFCI outlet has tripped and press its reset button. Try a different bulb in a fixture that went dark.
That is the whole list. Do not open the panel or remove outlet covers, and do not keep resetting a breaker that trips again. A breaker that will not stay on is telling you something.
Call now if you smell burning or see sparking
Some electrical symptoms are emergencies. A burning smell from an outlet, switch, or panel. Sparking when you plug something in. A hot breaker panel. Scorch marks on an outlet face. If you see or smell any of these, stop using that circuit and call us right away.
These are the cases where waiting costs more than the repair. Heat and arcing damage wiring over time, and what starts as a warm outlet becomes a much bigger job the longer it runs.
Common questions
My breaker tripped. Can I just reset it?
You can reset a tripped breaker once. If it holds, it may have been a momentary overload. If it trips again right away, or keeps tripping over the following days, stop resetting it and call us. Repeated tripping means something on that circuit needs attention.
One outlet stopped working but the breaker is fine. What is it?
Usually a tripped GFCI upstream, a loose connection, or a failed outlet. We test from the outlet back toward the panel to find where power stops, then fix that point.
Why do my lights flicker?
Common causes include a loose neutral, an overloaded circuit, a failing dimmer or bulb, or voltage dip when the AC starts. Flickering across the whole house points to the panel or service; one room points to that circuit.
How much will the repair cost?
We diagnose first, then give you the price in writing before work begins. A simple repair like replacing a failed outlet costs far less than chasing a fault through old wiring, which is exactly why the diagnosis comes before the quote.
